EAL & Language Profile Assessments
Your Journey to a Fulfilling Life
BPVS and WellComm
The BPVS (British Picture Vocabulary Scale) and WellComm are both assessments used to understand children’s language development, but they focus on slightly different areas. The BPVS looks specifically at a child’s understanding of spoken words (receptive vocabulary). During the assessment, the child is asked to point to pictures that match words spoken by the adult, which helps identify how well they understand language compared to others their age. WellComm, on the other hand, is a broader screening tool that looks at a range of speech and language skills, including understanding, expression, and communication. It helps identify whether a child may need support and provides practical activities and strategies to help develop their skills. In short, BPVS gives a more in-depth measure of word understanding, while WellComm offers a wider overview of a child’s communication development along with guidance for next steps.
